The whole reason we focus on process is to end up with a building. Not just a pretty design, but a building that people actually like, and that meets the needs of the larger group. Hopefully this building will function like a custom-made tool -- shaped to fit the user's hand and perfectly suited to its job. But a building has this strange habit of outliving its makers. As it takes on a life of its own, a building's job is to fit into the landscape and improve the daily lives of the community.
Since it will be judged by our grandchildren as either fit for the job or not, the building we make together needs to function as a timeless work of art. People make buildings to shape the world they live in. If we work together, and bring art to every step of the process, then the building we leave behind is likely to be cherished both for its function and its form. And that's an accomplishment worth the effort. |
