The Metropolitan Condominiums

Located on a steep hillside along Oregon's rugged and picturesque Pacific coast, the Step House moves down its site, mirroring the landscape.  Four levels create a cadence to the space, from entry to great room, to bedroom and private areas at the lower levels.

The great room is a completely open floor plan with kitchen and living space and is dominated by the large expanse of windows that bring in natural light and make the panoramic view the focal point.  Repetition of wood and stone create a cozy atmosphere, especially on gray coastal winter days.

A 20-foot wall of glass accordion doors open to the adjacent deck and the slate of the fireplace wall pierces through exterior wall. The result is a blending of the spaces and seamless indoor/outdoor living experience.

Because the owner planned to telecommute, the home office was an especially important element of the design. Perched above the great room at the entry level, it is oriented to maximize ocean views. Built-in cabinetry increases efficiency in the small space.

The master bathroom continues the feeling of openness and connection to the landscape. A beautiful silver marble covers the floor and walls, accented by a cherry wood cabinet that doubles as a room divider for the walk-in shower.  A ceiling mounted spout fills the Japanese style cedar ‘ofuro’ soaking tub and bathers are treated to views of the Pacific through a personal tubside window.
