The newest high school for Beaverton School District will create a vibrant, comprehensive educational campus for 2200 students and 300 staff in the fast-growing southwest area of the District. The building has been brought forward to the southeast corner of the 47-acre property, along the busy thoroughfare of SW Scholls Ferry Road, to create a civic presence at the corner as well as help preserve part of natural wetlands . Extensive playfields and athletic facilities are placed to the north and west of the school to mediate the space between the school and adjacent neighborhoods.

Located at the edge of the regional Urban Growth Boundary, the school’s multi-story, contemporary design introduces a more urban character to the surrounding future suburban neighborhoods and adjacent farmland. A blend of bricks from dark to light with punched windows wraps the building. A large portal opening along the south façade reveals a large landscaped courtyard that will become the heart of the new campus. Three-story academic bars frame the courtyard to the east and north; the gym and performing arts wing comprise the western border. This organization also negotiates the section of the site’s rolling terrain down to SW Scholls Ferry Road.

Benches and low walls spread across the 35,000 square-foot landscaped courtyard which will accommodate outdoor classes, performances and other gatherings. Storm water from the building’s roof will also be collected and filter and then released back into the watershed..  Construction of $95 million South Cooper Mountain High School will be completed in concurrent packages to meet the District’s accelerated schedule. Ground-breaking will occur Summer 2015; the opening is slated for Fall 2017.
