Designed to initially house grades six through eight, the 750-student Rock Creek Middle School is a light-filled learning environment that encourages strong student connection and real-world learning opportunities. The 129,000-square-foot facility is divided into three 250-student houses with central support areas. Specialty classrooms and special program areas are conveniently located at the core of the school for accessibility by all students and the community after hours. |

Windows, natural materials and soft light make learning spaces inviting and healthy. The use of technology as a teaching tool was integral to the classroom design. |

Flexibility was key to the school’s planning in anticipation of a future expansion into a high school. When district needs dictate, a second floor will be built atop the one-story classroom pod at the northwest corner of the school, and a second gym will be added. Locker rooms are strategically located so the second gym will make use of these facilities. The commons/ cafeteria was also designed to be easily expanded without disrupting adjacent spaces, while preserving pastoral views to the surrounding hills. |
