This rooftop addition for St. Mary’s Academy, the only all-women parochial school in Oregon, gives the school much needed classroom and administrative space, as well as space for mass, large functions, and fundraisers. The new student commons is the heart of the school, providing a relaxed “living room” atmosphere for students. The generously sized room is furnished with a variety of soft seating, tables and chairs to provide a space for study, socializing and student meetings. |

The addition blends with the existing brick façade and balances an earlier addition on the north end of the third floor. Existing rooftop mechanical units have been screened from view of neighboring buildings by the new structure and rooftop trellis. An interstitial floor has been sandwiched between the new addition and the existing roof to house new mechanical units and to provide a level floor for five new classrooms, student commons, boardroom, offices, and support spaces of the addition. |
